GHOSTS
ON THE ROAD
When
I moved to Willoughby, Jennie warned me.
“Don’t take the North Road on Saturday nights.”
“Why
not?”
“Too
many ghosts walk that route.”
“Oh?
Why is that?” I humoured her.
“They’re
going to the picture show.”
“Are
you serious?”
“We
had a flash flood in ‘95. The North Road became a river. Flooded the town and drowned everyone in the picture house.
Saturday nights it was always full.
We buried the dead and cleaned up the town. After we rebuilt the picture house, the ghosts started turning up. They missed the movies, you see.
Death is pretty boring.”

I am re-entering the Flash Fiction world if I can actually write one in a flash! This is in honour of THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS being published by HarmonyPress and being available here http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=5010 and a Amazon.
ReplyDeleteHi, Linda! SO nice to see you again after all this time. Welcome!
ReplyDeleteWell, I gotta tell you, this is a good read and highly complimentary to the prompt. I'm sure those ghosts went to see some good movies! Enjoyable stuff. Thanks!
Thanks, it is nice to be back - and I am glad you enjoyed my little take on the prompt.
DeleteDear Lindaura,
ReplyDeleteIs this a tragedy or a comedy? You had me going until that last line and then you had me laughing. Great to see you here.
Aloha,
Doug
I didn't know what I was planning when I started. I just thought I should return to the fold, if I could do everything in a flash! so I ended up with this pretty quickly - took a lot of editing as usual, so it is nothing like what I started with.
DeleteNice to see you, too.
I can see how it might be boring. Lovely to have you back. Seems a few old friends are reappearing - and that has to be good.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm not the only ghost returning. I hope I can hang around for a while.
DeleteHA,, even the undead need to find something amusing to do.. very clever take...
ReplyDeleteThanks Bjorn, nice to see you here. Glad you enjoyed my take on the prompt.
DeleteNext Stop, Willoughby! Glad to see the Boomer Babe back in action. I hope your book is a great success. Well, I'm off to the movies, time for Saturday Night Dead!
ReplyDeleteHey! Nice to see you Perry! So glad someone got my reference to the Twilight Zone. Of course it would be you...Now get busy downloading my book. It is full of juicy parts I know you will like. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS by Linda Palund - available on Amazon, of course - and Barnes & Noble.
DeleteWelcome back, Linda. I agree with Doug--I was laughing at the end, imaging all the ghosts going to the movies. There was a Willoughby near our Cleveland suburb and our younger daughter is there a summer internship. Perhaps I should warn her. :-)
ReplyDeletejanet
Yes! You better warn her. Don't you remember that Twilight Zone????? Anyway, it is nice to be back and to be as weird as ever...
Deletegreat funny ghost story Linda. welcome back and CONGRATULATIONS on your book! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks and thanks!
DeleteWonderful ghost story! Good to see you again, and congrats on the book :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for enjoying my flash back into the brink!
DeleteDeath is pretty boring.
ReplyDeleteLoved this. :-)
Thank you for loving my ghosts.
DeleteLinda, we've missed you and Congrats on publication! This story really carried me away. It reads like a historical piece, with the added fun of some ghost. Clearly you haven't lost your touch. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you and glad to be back. I hope I can keep it up -but working on the next novel does take precedent.
DeleteThat's a lovely tale. I like the idea of ghosts being boring. Do you think they behave badly in the back row as when they were alive and young?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. The Ghosts aren't boring, they like to get their two cents in about the films they see - and comment a lot. They are also pissed off because they can't get any popcorn anymore.
DeleteThanks for bringing a smile to this prompt. Well done! Alicia
ReplyDeleteThank you, Alicia. Glad to make you smile.
DeleteDear Linda,
ReplyDeleteSo nice to see you back among us. I'm sure movie night is never boring these days. ;) Your end made me laugh.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you, Rochelle, I will try to dwell among the living as much as I can...
DeleteLinda, Congratulations on your book! Humorous and well-written story. With all those ghosts, YouTube will probably show up next. : ) ---Susan
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. So glad you liked my little tale. It's so hard to drive into town on Saturday nights. Too many ghosts on the road!
DeleteHa!ha!This was a real fun read Linda-loved it:-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you got a laugh out of it!
DeleteLinda it's great to see you back and I loved this story.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at your last line, then thought that you are probably right - who knows???
Well done
Dee
It is nice to be back. I forgot how many of you I know and actually like in this weird cyber sort of way - a literary connection, I guess, but that's what I'm all about right now, so it's nice.
DeleteHa ha that is a great ending. Though with some of the movies these days they will be going out through the walls faster than a Ghostbuster.
ReplyDeleteYes, movies these days are awful! I can't find one to like. They are either cloying, stifling, juvenile or filled with gruesome, gory special effects. Television is where its at. True Detective rules!
