THE MONUMENT
We
took our bearings from a gigantic alien monument standing in a weed-choked
field. We landed our ship in its
shadow.
Shaped
from porous rock, it was ancient and grotesque. We could not ascertain its purpose. What was it meant to represent? What kind of creature could possibly
have constructed it? With only four appendages, how could they exist?
Fungi
covered most of it, somehow able to survive in these hostile conditions.
We
believed this was a dead planet, but beneath the monument, we classified abundant
insect life.
“My god, the cockroaches! Look at the size of them!”
